The Coronado Island Film Festival presents this event with sponsorship from Glorietta Bay Inn and Vintage Village Theatres, which will screen “Selma” at 5 p.m., directly following the conclusion of the reception, which is 3-4:30pm.
Congressman Scott Peters is the US Representative of California’s 52nd District since 2013. We welcome Congressman who will make remarks on this national holiday named in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Mayor Richard Bailey of Coronado will give remarks on the significance of the Martin Luther King Jr national holiday and welcome everyone to Coronado for the 2nd Annual MLK, Jr. Celebration
Claudia Ludlow, General Manager of the Glorietta Bay Inn, is currently General Manager of the Year as voted by the California Hotel and Lodging Association. Ludlow, who grew up in Coronado, also serves as Chair of the Coronado Tourism Improvement District.
The master of ceremonies for the Coronado Island Film Festival’s 2nd annual MLK, Jr. Reception will be Lynda Martin, five-time Emmy nominated Television News Anchor on XETV San Diego 6, KSWB Channel 5 and Radio News Anchor on KOGO AM 600. She won the Edward R. Murrow Team Award which is presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association in recognition of outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.
Three performers have been added to the schedule for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day tribute and reception to be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16 at Glorietta Bay Inn.
Angela Petty is a true San Diego, California native, she has been singing from the young age of four, with a deep love and passion for her church choir roots. She has a wide vocal range and will amaze you with her incredible energy and talents as she does her rendition of Gladys Knight, the late Whitney Houston, and other well-known artists. But most of all, Angela has a great love for music and singing.
Alyce Smith Cooper is an ancestral storyteller, writer, poet, actor and television host. She is co-author of “The Gumbo Pot Poems: A Savory Recipe for Life, Community and Gumbo through Poetry,” a book that celebrates food, friendship and family, and available for purchase here on Amazon. In 2005, Cooper was inducted into the Women’s Museum Hall of Fame. She currently works as a registered nurse and is an associate minister at Bethel A.M.E. Church in San Diego.
Leonard Patton, singer and actor who has appeared in several productions at Lamb’s Players Theatre, will present a reading of Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech. Leonard, an accomplished singer and musician who also performs with Peter Sprague and in his own jazz duo, will perform a song selected for the occasion with Glorietta Bay Inn’s grand piano.
The screening of “Selma”, sponsored by Vintage Village Theaters, will start at 5pm in the historically restored Village Theater located at 820 Orange Avenue.
Admission to both the MLK, Jr. reception and screening of Selma are sold out due to overwhelming interest.
